DAB knowledge from the experts

DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is the modern, digital successor to analogue FM. We also refer to DAB+ simply as ‘DAB’ as it has now become standard.
However, DAB offers several additional advantages over FM:

  • DAB offers a much wider selection of programmes. In most places in Switzerland, between 50 and 120 radio programmes can be received on DAB. In higher locations, over 200 can be received. With FM, the variety was usually only between 6 and 25 programmes.

  • DAB also enables high-quality coverage of populated areas for the first time. As a result, 99.5% of the Swiss population already receives DAB and over 99% of roads are covered. See also: https://www.worlddab.org/countries/switzerland

  • The crackling and static that was often heard on FM radio is no longer present with DAB.

  • With DAB, not only is reception coverage better, but significantly fewer transmitters are required, which consume much less power overall.

  • DAB can also be used to receive track information, logos and images, as well as traffic data for navigation systems. The new ASA (Automatic Safety Alert, formerly EWS) will also be able to warn or wake people up in the future.

  • As with FM radio, reception does not incur any additional costs or data usage. No personal data is sent back either.

  • The disadvantage of DAB is that indoor reception can be more difficult. However, FM also stopped working with thick concrete walls, metalised windows or metal façades.
Sumatronic has therefore developed a variety of solutions and offers a wide range of products, from simple antennas to repeater systems.

In many parking garages it gets dark and narrow as soon as you enter and the radio often goes silent as soon as you reach the barrier. Guests are spared this experience in the Casino-Palace Luzern parking garage.
